Dear Parents / Carers
Year 3 homework
Happy New Year. We hope those of you we haven’t spoken to yet had a good holiday. The children have settled well into the new term.
Just some changes and reminders for you.
- Spellings – As the English homework Bug Club is not yet set up, we have decided to give ten spellings weekly, and ask children to write sentences including five of them. They have a small green homework book which they must bring to school every Monday (both Badgers and Ladybirds).
- Mathletics - Most children are working well on this. New tasks are put on weekly, on Tuesdays. There are lots of extra activities they can do if they want to.
- Times tables – These need to be learnt out of order. It’s good to practise counting up and down as a first stage (eg 2, 4, 6, 8 etc and backwards), but children need to be able to recall an answer quickly and out of order (eg 5x2, 8 twos). If your child is finding it hard to recall them, focus on two on the first day, then revise these and add another one, and so on. If it takes a few weeks to learn one times table that’s ok as long as they are working on it.
- Learning spellings and times tables – we learn much better with regular repetition, so a little time every day is better than trying to learn them all the day before the test. They will then hopefully retain them for life. You don’t need to be sitting down – they can be practised while walking, driving, in the bath, etc.
