14th March 2016
On Monday 21st March Year 4 are going to go on a local walk to visit the river in Highams Park. This is to complete our topic work celebrating the end of Winter and the start of Spring.
Alongside Ewa Augustyniak (Mila’s mum), I will be teaching the class about the traditional Polish celebration of the ‘Drowning of Morena’ (topienie Marzanny).
The ‘Morena’ is a braided, straw female effigy, which will be created by the children during the week prior to the trip. The effigy symbolises the hardships of Winter. At the end of Winter she is ‘drowned’ by being thrown into a local river. This symbolic ending of Winter leads to celebrations that spring has finally arrived.
We are proud to celebrate the different nationalities, cultures and languages represented at Oakhill and this is a great chance for the children to participate in an activity from another culture.
As this is a local walk, you have already given permission for this at the start of the year. If I do not have this form signed then I will be sending out another copy. For this trip to take place, we need parent helpers to walk with us to the river on the afternoon of 21st March. We will be leaving at 1.30 and will not be out for more than an hour. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are able to accompany us on this trip.
